O'Connell House SW11

This project was unique. The existing building is in a conservation area but is completely different from other houses in the road. It was built much later and may have been a cobbler's business with an out-building stretching the length of the rear garden.

The client wanted a second floor to be constructed within the existing shell. The planners resisted this until we pointed out that there were precedents within the conservation area. Eventually they agreed and also allowed the rickety old out-building to be replaced with a new wing housing a guest bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. A side extension was also added to accommodate a new utility room with bathroom and dressing areas on the floor above.

Marrying many disparate elements proved a difficult challenge but the finished result greatly improves the street frontage whilst doubling the overall floor area. At the back, the architecture changes from traditional into a modernist expression. MR Design provided a full service from inception to completion on site.
